How to break 90

To break 90 golfers need to play more and practice but which areas of the game are the most important in order to bring those scores down?

1. Putting

Top of the list has to be putting. Many beginners can get the ball on the green in a few shots and then it takes another 3 or 4 every time to drop the ball in the hole. A good target for golfers of any level is to take no more than 2 putts on each green.

The Maths:

4 putts x 18 holes = 72 shots

3 putts x 18 holes = 54 shots

2 putts x 18 holes = 36 shots

You can see what a big difference there is between taking 3 or 4 putts and taking 2 putts. Improving your putting average is the best way to save shots on your round.

2. Chipping

The second most important part of bringing scores down is chipping. I have seen people miss the target by a few yards and then take a few attempts to get the ball onto the green. The ideal target when chipping is to never take more than 1 chip & 2 putts. If you can get to that level your scores will improve very quickly.

Once you have improved around the greens you can work on hitting the ball more consistently to improve your scores further. This will just help you to hit more fairways & greens.
